FDA & USDA & EPA, oh my!

In the U.S., food for human consumption is jointly regulated by both the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture (USDA). But interestingly, tolerance limits for pesticide residues in food are established by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 40 CFR 180. These three federal agenciues all work in concert to both ensure proper use of approved pesticides and to ensure absence of un-approved and banned pesticides in domestic and imported foods. This is accomplished through the U.S. National Residue Program for Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products wherein hundreds of thousands of samples are collected and evaluated for drug & pesticide residues annually.
